In 1916, Sanger established the country’s first birth control clinic. She founded the American Birth Control League in 1921, which later evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

Sanger founded the first family planning and birth control clinic in the United States on October 16, 1916, at 46 Amboy Street in the Brownsville district of Brooklyn. Sanger was arrested nine days after the facility began.

Her bail was set at $500, and she was released and returned to her house. Sanger proceeded to see some women in the clinic until the cops arrived again.

She and her sister, Ethel Byrne, were arrested again for violating a New York state statute prohibiting the distribution of contraceptives. Sanger was also accused of causing a public annoyance.

In January 1917, Sanger and Byrne were put on trial. Byrne was found guilty and sentenced to 30 days in a workhouse, but she embarked on a hunger strike to protest her sentence. She was the first woman hunger striker in the United States to be force-fed.

Margaret’s father immigrated to the United States when he was 14 years old and joined the army as a drummer in the Civil War when he was 15 years old.

During the Great Famine, Anne traveled to Canada with her family. In 1869, she married Michael. Anne Higgins conceived 18 times in 22 years, giving birth to 11 children alive before dying at 49. Sanger was the sixth of eleven children to survive, and she grew up in a busy household.
